Truthout<\/em> is on the cutting edge of publishing principled, accurate and impactful journalism. These are some of the awards our stories and writers have won over the years.<\/p>\n

2024 Anthem Award
<\/strong>\u201cRemaking the Exceptional\u201d<\/a><\/span> — a series of explainer videos made through a collaboration between Truthout<\/em>, Zealous<\/em> and Teen Vogue<\/em> won in the News & Journalism category. The videos unpacked myths about policing and incarceration, and proposed alternatives.<\/p>\n

2022 Donald F. Erickson Synapses Award
<\/strong>The Crossroads Fund, which supports movements for social and economic justice, presented Truthout<\/em> this award for our independent reporting and commentary.<\/p>\n

2021 Izzy Award
<\/strong>Truthout<\/em> was awarded a second Izzy in four years; this time for \u201coutstanding achievement in independent media.\u201d The judges recognized Truthout<\/em>\u2019s \u201cDespair and Disparity: The Uneven Burdens of COVID-19\u201d<\/a><\/span> series, which included over 250 articles covering the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n

2020 First Amendment Award
<\/strong>Staff writer Candice Bernd<\/a><\/span> won a First Amendment Award from the Fort Worth, Texas, chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in the “Defending the Disadvantaged” category. Bernd reported on a South Texas tribe\u2019s pledge to defend their sacred sites<\/a><\/span> from President Trump\u2019s border wall.<\/p>\n

2018 Izzy Award
<\/strong>Truthout<\/em> contributing writer Dahr Jamail<\/a><\/span> was given the award for his reporting on climate change and environmental issues, and his Climate Disruption Dispatches<\/a><\/span>, a monthly round-up of the latest climate research and trends. The judges wrote: “There is an urgency and passion in Dahr Jamail\u2019s reporting that is justified by the literally earth-changing subject matter. And it\u2019s supported by science and on-the-scene sources, whether covering ocean pollution, sea level rise, deafening noise pollution or Fukushima radiation.”<\/p>\n

2018 San Francisco Press Club Journalism Awards
<\/strong>America\u2019s Toxic Prisons<\/a><\/span>, a joint Truthout<\/em> and Earth Island Journal<\/em> investigation by Truthout<\/em> staff reporter Candice Bernd<\/a><\/span>, Zoe Loftus-Farren and Maureen Nandini Mitra, was awarded second place in two categories: environment\/nature reporting and investigative magazine reporting.<\/p>\n

2016 Media Accountability Award
<\/strong>Truthout<\/em> staff reporter Candice Bernd<\/a><\/span> won the award given annually by the Dallas Peace and Justice Center.<\/p>\n

2016 Native American Journalists Association Award
<\/strong>Jason Coppola\u2019s chronicle about the epidemic of youth suicides on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation — \u201cSuicide on the Great Sioux Nation\u201d<\/a><\/span> — won third place in the feature story category.<\/p>\n

2013 Society of Professional Journalists\u2019 Sigma Delta Chi Awards
<\/strong>Truthout<\/em>\u2019s then editor-in-chief Maya Schenwar<\/a><\/span> won the award in the Online Column Writing category for her writings on incarceration.<\/p>\n

2012 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism
<\/strong>Truthout<\/em> writer Gareth Porter<\/a><\/span> won this prize for his stories<\/a><\/span> exposing<\/a><\/span> the Obama administration\u2019s military strategy in Afghanistan. \u201cIn a series of extraordinary articles, Gareth Porter has torn away the facades of the Obama administration and disclosed a military strategy that amounts to a war against civilians,\u201d judges wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n
