These are some of the awards our stories and writers have won over the years.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2024 Anthem Award<br \/><\/strong><span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/video\/challenging-the-criminalization-of-trauma-survivors\/\">\u201cRemaking the Exceptional\u201d<\/a><\/span> &#8212; a series of explainer videos made through a collaboration between <em>Truthout<\/em>, <em>Zealous<\/em> and <em>Teen Vogue<\/em> won in the News &amp; Journalism category. The videos unpacked myths about policing and incarceration, and proposed alternatives.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2022 Donald F. Erickson Synapses Award<br \/><\/strong>The Crossroads Fund, which supports movements for social and economic justice, presented <em>Truthout<\/em> this award for our independent reporting and commentary.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2021 Izzy Award<br \/><\/strong><em>Truthout<\/em> was awarded a second Izzy in four years; this time for \u201coutstanding achievement in independent media.\u201d The judges recognized <em>Truthout<\/em>\u2019s <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/series\/despair-and-disparity-the-uneven-burdens-of-covid-19\/\">\u201cDespair and Disparity: The Uneven Burdens of COVID-19\u201d<\/a><\/span> series, which included over 250 articles covering the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2020 First Amendment Award<br \/><\/strong>Staff writer <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/authors\/candice-bernd\/\">Candice Bernd<\/a><\/span> won a First Amendment Award from the Fort Worth, Texas, chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in the &#8220;Defending the Disadvantaged&#8221; category. Bernd reported on a South Texas tribe\u2019s <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/a-tribal-camp-in-south-texas-is-vowing-to-resist-trumps-wall\/\">pledge to defend their sacred sites<\/a><\/span> from President Trump\u2019s border wall.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018 Izzy Award<br \/><\/strong><em>Truthout<\/em> contributing writer <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/authors\/dahr-jamail\">Dahr Jamail<\/a><\/span> was given the award for his reporting on climate change and environmental issues, and his <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/series\/climate-disruption-dispatches\/\">Climate Disruption Dispatches<\/a><\/span>, a monthly round-up of the latest climate research and trends. The judges wrote: &#8220;There is an urgency and passion in Dahr Jamail\u2019s reporting that is justified by the literally earth-changing subject matter. And it\u2019s supported by science and on-the-scene sources, whether covering ocean pollution, sea level rise, deafening noise pollution or Fukushima radiation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>2018 San Francisco Press Club Journalism Awards<br \/><\/strong><span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/series\/toxic-prisons\/\">America\u2019s Toxic Prisons<\/a><\/span>, a joint <em>Truthout<\/em> and <em>Earth Island Journal<\/em> investigation by <em>Truthout<\/em> staff reporter <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/authors\/candice-bernd\/\">Candice Bernd<\/a><\/span>, Zoe Loftus-Farren and Maureen Nandini Mitra, was awarded second place in two categories: environment\/nature reporting and investigative magazine reporting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016 Media Accountability Award<br \/><\/strong><em>Truthout<\/em> staff reporter <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/authors\/candice-bernd\/\">Candice Bernd<\/a><\/span> won the award given annually by the Dallas Peace and Justice Center.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2016 Native American Journalists Association Award<br \/><\/strong>Jason Coppola\u2019s chronicle about the epidemic of youth suicides on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation &#8212; <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/suicide-on-the-great-sioux-nation\/\">\u201cSuicide on the Great Sioux Nation\u201d<\/a><\/span> &#8212; won third place in the feature story category.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2013 Society of Professional Journalists\u2019 Sigma Delta Chi Awards<br \/><\/strong><em>Truthout<\/em>\u2019s then editor-in-chief <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/authors\/maya-schenwar\/\">Maya Schenwar<\/a><\/span> won the award in the Online Column Writing category for her writings on incarceration.<\/p>\n<p><strong>2012 Martha Gellhorn Prize for Journalism<br \/><\/strong><em>Truthout<\/em> writer <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/authors\/gareth-porter\/\">Gareth Porter<\/a><\/span> won this prize for his <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/how-mcchrystal-and-petraeus-built-an-indiscriminate-killing-machine\/\">stories<\/a><\/span> <span><a href=\"https:\/\/truthout.org\/articles\/the-lies-that-sold-obamas-escalation-in-afghanistan\/\">exposing<\/a><\/span> the Obama administration\u2019s military strategy in Afghanistan. \u201cIn a series of extraordinary articles, Gareth Porter has torn away the facades of the Obama administration and disclosed a military strategy that amounts to a war against civilians,\u201d judges wrote.<\/p>\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Truthout is on the cutting edge of publishing principled, accurate and impactful journalism.
