The <em>Financial Times<\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ft.com\/content\/da74c248-fb36-4ff1-8fb2-d2dd1e00fde8\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> late last week that John Addison, a senior trader at Vitol, was involved in his company\u2019s efforts to secure the deal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Addison, who attended a recent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/white-house\">White House<\/a> meeting with other top oil executives, donated $6 million total to Trump\u2019s 2024 presidential campaign via several <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/super-pacs\">super PACs<\/a>, including $5 million to MAGA Inc.<\/p><div class=\"truth-post-content-high\" id=\"truth-2432628536\"><div class=\"callout inline-callout p-4 mb-5 callout--subscribe callout--light\" href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/social-media\">social media<\/a> that Vitol has a \u201ccriminal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/archives\/opa\/pr\/former-energy-trader-vitol-inc-pleads-guilty-international-bribery-scheme\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">history<\/a> of bribing foreign governments\u201d and called the Venezuelan oil deal \u201cfundamentally corrupt.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cTrump took Venezuela\u2019s oil at gunpoint, and gave it to one of his biggest campaign donors,\u201d Murphy wrote. \u201cVitol had to buy access to Trump because under normal circumstances, they wouldn\u2019t be able to get a deal like this.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vitol is one of a number of corporations positioned to reap windfall profits from the Trump administration\u2019s assault on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/venezuela\">Venezuela<\/a>, abduction of its president, and efforts to seize and indefinitely control the country\u2019s vast oil reserves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As the <em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/washington-post\">Washington Post<\/a><\/em> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/business\/2026\/01\/16\/venezuela-oil-takeover-profits\/\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">reported<\/a> over the weekend:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Hedge fund billionaire Paul Singer\u2019s firm Elliott Investment Management has for years been in the process of acquiring distressed Venezuelan-owned assets in the US and is on the cusp of owning them. After clearing final regulatory and legal approval, the firm can use them to make a considerable profit turning newly available Venezuelan oil into gasoline. The company that would be acquired by an Elliott affiliate is Citgo, the Houston-based refining firm owned by Venezuela\u2019s state oil company Petr\u00f3leos de Venezuela (PDVSA). Citgo owns refineries in Illinois, Louisiana and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/texas\">Texas<\/a> that are well-positioned to profit off the millions of barrels of Venezuelan oil that Trump says will be steered to US refineries because it is a particularly heavy blend of crude that is difficult to process. Only certain refineries, like those run by Citgo, are equipped to handle it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Proceeds from the US sale of Venezuelan oil are being <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/01\/15\/business\/qatar-venezuela-oil-sale-account\"  rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">stashed in Qatar<\/a> \u2014 an arrangement that critics said opens the door to additional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/corruption\">corruption<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cAfter illegally and unconstitutionally striking Venezuela, Trump is now selling Venezuelan oil through a campaign donor, and funneling the proceeds to an offshore account in Qatar \u2014 creating a potential slush fund with no accountability, oversight, or guardrails for Trump and his allies,\u201d US Sen. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/cory-booker\">Cory Booker<\/a> (D-NJ) wrote late Sunday. \u201cHis continued abuse of power doesn\u2019t serve the Venezuelan people or the American people \u2014 and it certainly doesn\u2019t lower costs for Americans.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThis outrage,\u201d Booker added, \u201cis yet another example of his unchecked corruption as he again ignores laws and enriches his friends, donors, and himself.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"truth-post-content-after\" id=\"truth-1439136036\"><div class=\"callout inline-callout p-4 mb-5 callout-- callout--white\" id=\"truth-334871\" data-callout-id=\"334871\" data-callout-theme=\"white\" data-callout-placement=\"Post Content - After\" data-callout-title=\"2026-01 Main Campaign (FRU) Trump is silencing political dissent.
